A Tunisian fisherman in distress at sea was airlifted by an Armed Forces of Malta helicopter early on Tuesday.

He was taken to AFM's Airwing and transferred to Mater Dei Hospital by ambulance.

The AFM said its assistance was requested by Rome, which received the distress call.

The fisherman was a crew member on an Italian fishing vessel and required urgent medical attention.

Initial first aim was provided by an Italian Navy vessel until the arrival of the AFM team.
