Airshow lovers are in for another exciting year with a brand new routine from the RAF's Typhoon display team.

The 2025 season will be flown by Squadron Leader Nathan Shawyer, who takes over from Flight Lieutenant David "Turbo" Turnbull, who performed the displays last year.

Sqn Ldr Shawyer shadowed his predecessor at the end of the 2024 season while starting to design his new display sequence.

New sequences

A typical Typhoon display is usually a set of approved aerobatic manoeuvres that can be flown in this type of aircraft.

The team create a full display plan, as well as a more limited sequence as back-up in the event of bad weather.

Any new manoeuvres must be approved by regulators, with simulators used to check sequences before they are put into practice in flight.

Crowd safety is key, so pilots also use simulators to practise contingency plans for bad weather and to ensure they can handle the aircraft in the unlikely event of an emergency during a public display.

Practice makes perfect

The Typhoon display training is initially carried out at an altitude of 5,000ft, with flights typically following coastlines, roads or runways near RAF Coningsby.

Once a pilot is confident with the sequence, they are then cleared to practise at a lower altitude over the base, progressively stepping down base heights from 1,500ft to 500ft.

At the final display height of 500ft, the pilot is allowed to conduct level turns and flypasts at 300ft and 100ft in training.

The display is then reviewed before the pilot is granted a permit to safely perform a public display in front of a large crowd.

Typhoon aircraft lead RAF operations

The RAF Typhoon is a multi-role combat aircraft, which entered service with the Royal Air Force in 2003 and went on to be at the forefront of operations.

Based at RAF Lossiemouth and RAF Coningsby, they are capable of being deployed for the full spectrum of air operations including air policing, peace support and high-intensity conflict.

The Royal Air Force has the largest fleet of Eurofighter Typhoons.
