UN Security Council to meet over Russian strike on Kryvyi Rih

Ukraine has initiated an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council after 20 people were killed in a Russian ballistic strike on Kryvyi Rih last week.

Details: Sybiha stated that Ukraine had initiated both an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council and a special meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council "to bring Russian crimes to the forefront".

"Both meetings will be convened tomorrow [8 April – ed.] and will help to advance peace efforts and accountability.," Sybiha added.

He emphasised that Ukraine demands strong condemnation and decisive action from the international community.

"Russia must cease its terror against Ukrainian children and civilians, respond to the US full ceasefire proposal, which Ukraine has accepted, and end the war," Sybiha concluded.

Background:

  • On the evening of 4 April, Russian troops launched a ballistic missile strike on a residential area of Kryvyi Rih, killing 20 people, including 9 children. Over 60 others were injured. As of the morning of 7 April, 33 residents of Kryvyi Rih who were injured in the Russian ballistic missile attack on the city on 4 April remain in hospital; 18 adults and 2 children are in a serious condition.
  • On 6 April, several Western embassies in Ukraine joined in mourning for those killed in Kryvyi Rih.
  • French President Emmanuel Macron stated that by launching constant strikes, Russia is mocking proposals for peace talks.
