Top College Football Players To Watch In 2024

Top offensive tackle prospect Will Campbell is highly regarded after a productive career at LSU. However, while his production is great, scouts have one main issue with the star offensive lineman that has nothing to do with his production on the field.

Compared to the typical NFL left tackle, Campbell has short arms, leading many to believe that he should be moved inside to a guard spot.

Campbell does not agree with that sentiment, feeling like he should stick to the position he has played throughout his football career.

Citing that it had never been a problem for him until he became highly scrutinized during the NFL draft process, he strongly defended himself, calling it BS.

"For two years, nobody had any measurements on me, and nobody said anything about my play. So now, all of a sudden, arm length decides if I'm a good player or not? I think it's BS,' Campbell stated to reporters.

Campbell does have a point in that sense. He has been one of the top left tackles in college football despite his arm length while playing for a top SEC school, so it makes sense to question why it is suddenly a problem.

However, it could be a potential given, despite how good the SEC may be compared to the rest of college football, the NFL is a different animal, making something small such as arm length that much more important.

As with every position, the NFL draft isn't as simple as taking the best player on paper. The whole process would be very easy if that were the case.

Every player translates differently from college football to the pros, making the NFL Combine an important part of the draft process to find out all the little details about a player and how they compare to NFL stars at their position.

Arm length is a well-documented trait of top offensive tackles. That is why for one of the top left tackles in this year's draft, it is a huge debate.

It will be interesting to follow just how convincing Campbell can be to other teams that he is a left tackle. Given the importance of and the higher pay for the position, there is plenty of motivation for him to want to stay at his natural position.

On the contrary, if Campbell does seem like a better guard and that is his best avenue to a starting role, it will be hard for him to argue.

While arm length may seem trivial on the surface, it is historically extremely important for left tackles, making this discussion about Campbell worth having. Especially if teams are considering taking him in the top 10, every small detail matters, and what position he will be best at certainly matters.
