Suriname’s President wraps up “successful” visit to China

Suriname’s President Chandrikapersad Santokhi is to return to his homeland on Saturday following what he hailed as a “successful” official visit to China. 

Leading a delegation to the Asian powerhouse, Santokhi expressed satisfaction with the outcome, citing the forging of nine agreements aimed at bolstering bilateral cooperation.

Strengthening ties with China

During his stay, Santokhi engaged in high-level discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping and other senior officials. Reflecting on the meetings, Santokhi expressed optimism regarding the future trajectory of Suriname’s relationship with China. 

He emphasized his conviction that fostering closer ties with China will play a pivotal role in advancing Suriname’s prosperity and overall well-being.

Debt rescheduling progress

Upon returning to the Netherlands, Foreign Affairs, International Business, and International Cooperation Minister Albert Ramdin provided insights into the progress made during Santokhi’s visit.

Ramdin announced the completion of debt rescheduling negotiations with China at a technical level. 

He disclosed that political approval for the debt restructuring had been obtained, following similar protocols observed in a prior agreement with India. Ramdin further noted China’s decision to cancel numerous pre-2013 debts, a move expected to alleviate Suriname’s financial obligations significantly.

Broadening economic horizons

Ramdin elaborated on the multifaceted nature of the visit, highlighting engagements with 13 Chinese companies and substantive discussions on various technical and administrative matters.

Despite logistical challenges posed by the extensive itinerary, Ramdin commended the collective efforts of the delegation, underscoring their dedication in fostering closer ties between Suriname and China.

Outlook for Suriname-China relations

Ramdin expressed satisfaction with the attention Suriname garnered during the visit, foreseeing a promising future characterized by enhanced employment opportunities, increased trade volumes, and heightened investment inflows. 

He reiterated his belief in the mutually beneficial nature of the Suriname-China relationship, emphasizing its potential to drive economic growth and prosperity for the nation.
