The all-new 2021 Toyota Venza made a surprise debut today. It's a bundle deal with the Sienna minivan and promises to bring something fresh to the midsize crossover segment.
The Venza isn't a new product. The first-gen model came out at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show and was offered until 2015. This comeback model is different in many ways, and we have a sneaking suspicion that all is not as it seems.

From the front, the new Venza looks a lot like a classic Lexus RX 350. The blocky grille between the headlights suggests this is actually a re-badged Toyota Harrier (XU80), which is kind of like a Japanese market version of the RX.

Japanese cars, real Japanese cars, are usually very efficient, and the Versa is no different. Toyota is targetting 40 mph, and that's almost unprecedented in this segment. Under the hood, you will find a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated mated to the usual two electric motors that make up a hybrid drive. The Venza also has a third motor powering the rear wheels for on-demand AWD without the need for a prop shaft.

On the inside, the Venza is suitably roomy, offering over 30 cubic feet with the rear folded. The dashboard is minimalist and sports an available 12.3-inch touchscreen that can be paired to a 9-speaker 1,200-watt JBL audio system that's standard on the Limited.

Another interesting feature is the Star Gaze panoramic roof. At the push of a button, the special glass becomes glazed to reduce the greenhouse effect heating up the cabin. Mercedes did this many years ago in the SL-Class and other models, and now you can have similar technology in a Toyota.

The Venza will have an EV mode that allows you to drive for short distances without the engine on. Of course, 40 mpg is just a preliminary number. We'll know more when the crossover goes on sale this summer.
