The ministry’s deputy state secretary Raimonds Aleksejenko said that informal discussions and visits to Latvia’s enterprises and leading research organizations have shown that entrepreneurs and scientists in Latvia have many creative ideas how to develop innovative products and services that might help the Latvian economy switch to making high value-added products.
“The government’s task is to help with the realization of these ideas, so the Economics Ministry and the Latvian Investment and Development Agency together with entrepreneurs and representatives of the academic sector have started work on the identification of the first strategic projects in the areas of biomedicine and smart urban technologies that could be implemented with the help of EU funding,” said Aleksejenko.
Active discussions are currently under way in Europe on the EU’s next multiannual budget framework beyond 2020, which will outline the bloc’s policies and investment areas in the years to come. The European Commission has proposed a EUR 100 billion support to scientific research and innovation in the period 2021-2027 in order to maintain Europe’s leading position in research and innovation.
