Foundation accepting grant applications

TRAVERSE CITY — The Community Foundation for Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska and Leelanau counties is accepting grant applications for its fall grant cycle. The group anticipates awarding more than $180,000 during the cycle.

The Community Foundation has more than a dozen endowments, including its Youth Endowment, from which it will aware grants. A total of $50,000 is planned from the Youth Endowment, $10,000 to each of the five counties.

Blue Goat hosts grand opening

TRAVERSE CITY — The newly renovated Blue Goat Wine & Provisions is hosting a week-long Grand Opening celebration Sept. 20-24 that will feature daily wine and food tastings and giveaways.

New owners Linda Price, Amanda Danielson and Sebastian Garbsch modeled the store after stylish big city neighborhood wine boutiques. It features polished wood floors and black horizontal display racks. Inventory is arranged by flavor profile instead of grape varietal or region. All of the wines are curated by Danielson and draw from her network of relationships with local and international winemakers, importers and distributors.

Housing Summit scheduled for Oct. 16

TRAVERSE CITY — The third annual Northwest Michigan Housing Summit will be held on Monday, Oct. 16, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Hagerty Center at 715 East Front St.

Laurie Volk from the market research firm Zimmerman Volk Associates will deliver the keynote presentation, focusing on the population dynamics of the region and their impact on housing and retail markets. The summit will also feature the builder's perspective from Bob Filka, chief executive officer of the Home Builders Association of Michigan. Filka will share highlights from a new HBA of Michigan report.

Other topics on the agenda include the impact of statewide policy on housing, accessing capital for new development in small cities and rural communities and creative affordable housing options.

Licensing group to meet in Traverse City

ANN ARBOR — The Michigan Chapter of the Licensing Executives Society will host a meeting in Traverse City on Thursday, Sept. 21, at The Hagerty Center. The 4-8 p.m. meeting on leveraging intellectual property to increase business value will feature a panel discussion and networking event.

The panel discussion will detail how to identify, utilize and license intellectual property, adapting IP strategies for evolving technology and its impact on flow and valuation. Panelists include Jamie Kemler, vice president of intellectual property business strategy for Stryker Corporation; Bryce Pilz, director of licensing for the University of Michigan Tech Transfer and Ski Simms, senior vice president of Ann Arbor SPARK.

INTERLOCHEN — The Interlochen Area Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 27, at 5:30 p.m. at Bay View Flooring and Design, located at 274 North U.S. Highway 31 South.

Free SCORE workshop scheduled for Oct. 5

TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City's SCORE chapter will hold a free workshop entitled Assess Your Entrepreneurial Skills on Thursday, Oct. 5, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the McGuire Community Room at the Traverse Area District Library on Woodmere Ave.

Attendees will discuss their individual results of the Entrepreneur Index Personal Assessment at the workshop with specifically-trained SCORE Traverse City mentors. This assessment is to be taken online prior to the workshop. The $35 assessment is free to the first 20 participants.

Young Professionals Conference is Oct. 6

TRAVERSE CITY — The ninth annual Young Professionals Conference of the Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 6, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Northwestern Michigan College's Hagerty Center.

The event includes an expo from noon to 1:30 p.m. with local businesses displaying products and services for conference attendees.

Former NASA astronaut and Suttons Bay resident Jerry Linenger is the keynote speaker. Other highlights include a Building on Your Strengths to Maximize Success workshop from Barbara Jordan of the Center for Coaching & Leadership Development and a screening of the Chamber's Leadership at the Movies program featuring strategist Jonathan Pool.

Scholarships for laboratory students available

TRAVERSE CITY — Applications are available for the American Proficiency Institute Scholarship Program, which will award five $2,000 scholarships to medical laboratory science students in 20917.

Scholarship applications are available at www.api-pt.com. Senior and junior level medical lab science students are encouraged to apply.

Applicants should complete the application and submit it to their program director for a signature and a statement of support. Program directors must submit the completed application to API by Nov. 10. Winners will be announced on Dec. 8.

Registration open for Chamber Business Expo

TRAVERSE CITY — Area businesses and organizations can reserve a space at the Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce Business Expo and Economic Outlook Breakfast on Tuesday, Nov. 14, at the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa.

The event draws more than 140 exhibitors and 1,300 attendees.

The Chamber's annual Economic Outlook Breakfast is from 7:30-9 a.m. in the resort's Michigan Ballroom. Presenters include Mitchell Stapley, chief investment officer with ClearArc Capital Inc. and Jeff Connolly, president of West Michigan Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan. TC Tourism wins awards

TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City Tourism was recognized in several categories at the Michigan Society of Association Executives 16th Annual Diamond Awards event on Sept. 14 in Dearborn.

TC Tourism earned two top honors, the Diamond Award, in the Website category and in the Magazine Publishing ($1 million or greater) category, for Traverse City Magazine.

It won honorable mentions in the Innovative Collaborations category, the Social Media Campaign category and the Website category.

MSAE, based in East Lansing, is a professional organization of more than 1,600 members that works to advance knowledge in the association industry.

mPerks available through delivery service

GRAND RAPIDS — Meijer and home delivery partner Shipt are now offering mPerks for its store-to-door service.

Meijer home-delivery customers can sign up for the mPerks rewards program or link an existing account to their Shipt account and earn rewards on qualifying purchases. The mPerks can then be redeemed during in-store visits at any Meijer store.

Meijer customers can sign up for Shipt memberships for $99 per year. Delivery is free for orders over $35 and $7 for orders under that amount.

Runway closures at Pellston Airport

PELLSTON — Emmet County's Pellston Regional Airport will be rehabilitating its primary runway, which will lead to closures through the expected completion of Friday, Oct. 27.

The main runway, 14/32, closed on Sept. 18 when all traffic will shift over to the secondary runway, 5/23. Both runways will be temporarily closed from Oct. 6-10, when Pellston Regional will be closed to all aircraft activity. The secondary runway is set to reopen after Oct. 10.

The estimated schedule is subject to change due to weather and other unforeseen delays.

Freshwater Summit planned for Oct. 20

TRAVERSE CITY — The Freshwater Roundtable presents the 10th annual Freshwater Summit will be held on Friday, Oct. 20, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hagerty Center at Northwestern Michigan College.

Presentations include meteotsunamis in the Great Lakes, the Boardman River FishPass project, swimmer's itch and a lightning session featuring eight-minute talks on local research and restoration projects, including an update on green infrastructure installations on Kids Creek.
